In June 2016, Western Illinois University students enrolled in the WIU Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Administration's study abroad program, "Recreation, Sport & Leisure of Spain: A Comparative Study with the U.S.U." were immersed in the richness of the Spanish culture and experienced a wide range of recreation, sports, and leisure activities available there. Study Abroad Video Contest Nov. 1-30; Winning Entries to Receive Study Abroad Scholarships

Recently, the Western Illinois University Office of Study Abroad and Outreach was able to more than double the number of study abroad scholarship awards for Western students.

MACOMB, IL — What inspires you to study abroad? The opportunities to answer this question and possibly receive scholarship support for a study abroad program are available through the Western Illinois University Office of Study Abroad and Outreach's student video contest this month.

Individuals' winning entries will be awarded study abroad scholarships—first prize $1,000, second prize $750 and third prize $500—which can be applied to study abroad programs in Spring 2017, Summer 2017 or Fall 2017.

According to Dawn Gray from the WIU Office of Study Abroad and Outreach, to enter, WIU student entrants can create unique 45-90 second videos based on the theme "What Inspires You to Study Abroad?"

Each participant must: be a degree-seeking Western student, be at least 18 years of age, have a minimum 2.5 grade point average, be in good judicial standing at Western and plan to study abroad in Spring '17, Summer '17 or Fall '17. Contest entries will be accepted Nov. 1-30.

Contest guidelines are as follows:

  • Each video entry must only include the individual entering the video (other individuals in the video will cause the video to be disqualified) and only one entry per WIU student is allowed;
  • Video entries must be submitted via email to studyabroad@wiu.edu by November 30 and be uploaded to the entering student's Facebook profile page between Nov. 1-30, with the setting on the post set to public (the globe symbol);
  • Videos cannot contain inappropriate, indecent or harmful images or language;
  • Winners will be selected by the highest number of shares (worth five points each) and likes (worth one point each) of the entered video; and
  • Winners will be announced in December.

WIU Office of Study Abroad and Outreach 2016 Video Contest Terms and Conditions

  • Entries must be original work and wholly owned property of the entrant (content must not infringe on any third-party's rights (including but not limited to intellectual property rights);
  • May not contain any copyrighted works including but not limited to trademarks, name of third-party organization or logo or any other intellectual property (e.g., music, etc.);
  • By submitting an entry, the entrant acknowledges the submission may be posted on the website for the WIU Office of Study Abroad and Outreach or any other official WIU website, including social media, at the discretion of the staff in the WIU Office of Study Abroad and Outreach;
  • Submission of an entry grants the WIU Office of Study Abroad and Outreach and its agents exclusive unconditional, irrevocable, worldwide rights to publish, use, adapt, edit and/or modify the entry in any way in whole or in part, in any and all media without limitation, without requiring approval before or after from the entrant and without compensation or consideration to the entrant whether or not such entry is selected as a winning entry.
