WIU Geography Presents 2017 Gabler Lecture and Workshop

MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University Department of Geography will host its annual Gabler Lecture from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28 in the University Union Heritage Room.

This year's lecture, "The Five Converging Forces Bringing Geography to the World," will be delivered by Joseph Kerski, a geographer and education manager with the Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. in Colorado. The event is open free to the public.

"Join Joseph Kerski as we examine geoawareness, geoenablement, geotechnology, crowdsourcing and storytelling, and explore how you can most effectively position yourself for an exciting career in GIS and geography," said WIU Professor of Geography Jongnam Choi. "He will also reveal the five skills you need most for a successful career in GIS and geography."

Kerski will also host a workshop from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 1 in the second floor computer lab in Malpass Library. The workshop, "Why Geospatial Data Quality Matters Now More than Ever," is open free to the public.

"In today's world of live web-mapping services, crowdsourcing, the Internet of Things and real-time information, geospatial data quality matters now more than ever," said Choi. "We will explore a series of real-world examples that will encourage you to think critically about today's rapidly changing landscape of geospatial data."
