COEHS Week April 13-17 in Macomb & QC

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL -- Western Illinois University's College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) will celebrate the college, its departments, faculty, staff and students during COEHS Week Monday, April 13 through Friday, April 17 on WIU's Macomb and Quad Cities campuses.

Highlights of the week include the Inaugural Graduate Research Symposia on the Macomb and QC campuses; Tech Fest 2009 and the announcement of winners for the COEHS student-organization video contest; a fitness boot camp with WIU COEHS Distinguished Alumnus Joe Decker, "the world's fittest man"; a retirement reception for COEHS Dean Bonnie Smith-Skripps; a Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) award ceremony; and much more.

Monday, April 13
10 a.m. -- "Lifespan Issues: A Panel Discussion," Horrabin Hall 1 (Macomb)/QC 113
This panel discussion is open free to the public; WIU-QC campus participants will be able to engage in the panel discussion via synchronous video conferencing in the WIU-QC building, room 113. Faculty members are encouraged to bring their students to learn more about issues that affect the human lifespan.

4:30–6 p.m. -- COEHS Graduate Research Symposium, Horrabin Hall 1 (Macomb)

Tuesday, April 14
4 p.m. -- ROTC Awards Ceremony, Sherman Hall Auditorium (Macomb)

4–5:30 p.m. – WIU-QC Graduate Research Symposium, WIU-QC 102 A/B

Wednesday, April 15
11 a.m.–1 p.m. -- Tech Fest 2009, Horrabin Hall Gym (Macomb)
"Celebrating a Decade of Tech: Tech Fest 2009": See wiu.edu/coehs/TechFest/index.html for more information.

1 p.m. -- Tech Fest Keynote Address by Mike Dickson, Director of Special Projects, University Technology, Horrabin Hall Gym (Macomb)
Winners of the COEHS student-organization video contest will be announced, and a prize drawing will follow the keynote address. Information about the student-video competition is available at wiu.edu/coehs/video.html. Video submissions are due on or before April 3.

5 p.m. -- "Learning to Salsa While Making Salsa! A Food Demonstration," Knoblauch Hall 239 (Macomb)
Learn to dance the Salsa and prepare authentic salsa. This presentation is open free to the public and sponsored by the DFMH department.

Thursday, April 16
8 a.m. -- RPTA Guest Speaker John de Graaf, Currens Hall 203 (Macomb)
Western's recreation, park and tourism administration (RPTA) department will present John de Graaf, national coordinator of the "Take Back Your Time" campaign (timeday.org); de Graaf's presentation is open free to the public.

10 a.m. -- "Perspectives: Bilingual Principal, Teacher and Students Regarding Educating English Learners," WIU-QC 113/Horrabin Hall 1 (Macomb)
This panel discussion is open free to the public. Faculty members are encouraged to bring students to learn about issues related to English-language learners. WIU-Macomb campus participants will be able to engage in the panel discussion via synchronous video conferencing in Horrabin Hall, room 1.

4–6 p.m. -- Retirement reception for Dean Bonnie Smith-Skripps, University Union Lamoine Room (Macomb)

Friday, April 17
All Day -- Distinguished Alumnus Day: 2009 Recipient Joe Decker

11 a.m. -- "Fitness Boot Camp with Joe Decker," Donald S. Spencer Student Recreation Center (Macomb)
Come and learn about fitness and health in this special fitness session with Distinguished Alumnus Joe Decker, "the world's fittest man" (see www.joe-decker.com), at the Spencer Student Recreation Center.

2 p.m. -- Campus Presentation by Distinguished Alumnus Joe Decker, Stipes Hall 121 (Macomb)
