WIU Major Works Concert: Coronation Mass, April 18

MACOMB, IL - - The Western Illinois University Symphony Orchestra, featuring guest German violinist Stephan Schardt, Western's University Singers and Concert Choir, will present their Major Works Concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 18 in the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) Recital Hall, located in Simpkins Hall.

Under the direction of Richard Hughey, the Symphony Orchestra will open with the "Oberon Overture" by Carl Maria von Weber. Violinist Schardt will be featured in the second selection, a Niels Gade composition, "Violin Concerto in D Minor Op. 56."

Schardt, a versatile musician, is a concertmaster, chamber musician and soloist who has worked in symphony and opera orchestras and ensembles for new music and recently in early music. He studied violin and historical performance practice at the Musikhochschule in Köln (Conservatory of Music in Cologne, Germany), and he was a scholarship recipient of the Deutscher Akademische Austausch Dienst (German Academic Exchange Service) at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst (Conservatory of Music and Performing Arts) in Vienna. He performed new music with chamber orchestras and ensembles, including the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and the Musikfabrik NRW (Music factory of North Rhine Westphalia), according to Hughey.

Schardt was the first concertmaster (1995-1999) at the Landesbühnen Sachsen in Radebeul (State Theater of Saxony) and performed as a soloist with various orchestras. He also routinely played in the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden as well as the WDR-Sinfonieorchester (West German Radio Symphony Orchestra) in Cologne. In 2000 he traveled the world as a soloist, chamber member and concertmaster of Musica Antiqua Köln. Schardt is He is an adjunct professor for baroque violin, modern violin performance practice and chamber music at the Folkwang-Hochschule (Folkwang Conservatory) in Essen. He lives in Cologne and works as a concertmaster, chamber musician and teacher.

Following intermission, Western's Symphony Orchestra, along with University Singers and Concert Choir, under the direction of James Stegall, professor and director of choral activities; will present Wolfgang Mozart's Mass in C Major KV 327, the "Coronation Mass." The program includes Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei.

Soloists will be soprano Lacey Phillips, a graduate music student from Quincy (IL); mezzo soprano Sarah Walker, a senior music major from Rock Island, IL; tenor Matt Brown, a graduate music student from Macomb; and baritone Dan Reem, a senior music major from Macomb.
