Conference on Bullying Behavior Offered for Educators Sept. 30

MACOMB, IL - - "Exclusion and Aggression: Identifying and Intervening in Bullying Behavior," a conference designed for teachers, school administrators, counselors, psychologists, social workers and professionals who work with school-aged youth, will be presented from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, at The Lodge Hotel and Conference Center in Bettendorf, IA. Registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 25.

Dr. Susan Swearer of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's (UNL) school psychology program will be the featured presenter. A licensed psychologist, she is the primary researcher on the Target Bullying project (targetbully.com) and has a long-standing record of working with schools and districts nationwide to establish cost-effective and data-based strategies to reduce bullying behavior. She has both authored and edited numerous publications on the topics of bullying, depression, and anxiety in school-aged youth. She is also co-director of the Nebraska Internship Consortium in Professional Psychology and is a supervising psychologist in the Child and Adolescent Therapy Clinic at UNL.

In addition to Swearer's presentation and afternoon breakout session, "Bullying and Mental Health Issues," the program will feature afternoon presentations on "Cyber-bullying," the "Olweus Bully Prevention Program" and "It's Elementary: Teaching LGBT Issues in Schools." Breakout-session presenters include Holly Nikels and graduate student Michelle Aurand of the Western Illinois University counselor education program, and Dan Jens and Ellen Reilly, both certified Olweus Bully Prevention Trainers.

The $89 registration fee includes lunch, attendance, program materials and the opportunity to receive continuing professional development units (CPDUs), continuing education units (CEUs) and social worker contact hours. Check-in begins at 8 a.m.
