WIU "Identifying and Intervening in Bullying Behavior" Conference Oct. 21; Register by Oct. 17

MACOMB, IL - - The Western Illinois University Department of Social Work and the School of Distance Learning, International Studies and Outreach are sponsoring the Friday, Oct. 21 conference, "Exclusion and Aggression: Identifying and Intervening in Bullying Behavior" in Peoria. The daylong event — designed for teachers, school administrators and psychologists, social workers, counselors and other mental health professionals — will provide information about how to implement specific bullying-prevention strategies and will feature recognized bullying behavior expert and co-director of the Bullying Research Network, Susan Swearer.

The opening registration session for the Oct. 21 conference begins at 8 a.m. at the Four Points by Sheraton (500 Hamilton Blvd., Peoria, IL). The "Exclusion and Aggression: Identifying and Intervening in Bullying Behavior" conference program will begin at 9 a.m., and the final session is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. Areas to be covered in the daylong conference include: the types of bullying (e.g., physical, emotional and cyber); the effects of bullying and the prevalence rate of it; and the five categories of bullying along a continuum of involvement (i.e., bullies, victims, bully-victims, bystanders and those not involved with bullying). Cost to attend the one-day conference is $99, which includes conference attendance and learning materials (lunch is at the discretion of each participant). Those who wish to attend must register on or before Monday, Oct. 17.

Participants who attend the full program are eligible for Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDUs), WIU Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or social worker contact hours. On the registration form, participants must indicate if they wish to receive CPDUs, CEUs or social worker contact hours. About the Presenter

Swearer is a licensed psychologist and is also a professor of school psychology at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. She currently serves as the principal investigator for the Target Bullying: Ecologically-Based Prevention and Intervention project (www.targetbully.com). Earlier this year, her bullying intervention program was featured on CBS "Sunday Morning," and she was an invited presenter at the White House Bullying Prevention Conference. She is a co-author of the recently published book, "Bullying Prevention and Intervention: Realistic Strategies for Schools" and has authored more than 100 book chapters and articles on the topics of bullying, depression and anxiety in school-aged youth.
