Carter Named Assistant Dean at WIU-QC

MACOMB, IL – Marcia Carter, professor in the Western Illinois University-Quad Cities Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Administration, has been named assistant dean for the WIU-QC campus, effective Aug. 1, according to College of Education and Human Services Dean Sterling Saddler.

"We are excited to have a college-level academic leader at the WIU-QC campus," Saddler said. "Marcia's prior experiences and her professional connections to the Quad Cities' communities complement the College's goals of access for students, technology, research and service. We look forward to having her on the Dean's Office team."

Carter is a certified therapeutic recreation specialist through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) and a certified park and recreation professional through the National Certification Board (NCB). In November 2012, Carter was inducted into the Academy of Leisure Sciences, based on her time contributed to the leisure industry and advancements made to the study of leisure.

During her time at WIU-QC, Carter has taught both undergraduate and graduate level courses, including upper and lower division, general honors and internship courses. Beyond her professional duties at Western, Carter has authored numerous book chapters and journal articles. She has also co-authored more than 10 books since 1985, her most recent being, "Therapeutic Recreation: A Practical Approach."

Carter earned her Re.D. from Indiana University (Bloomington, IN) in 1976; her master's degree in recreation from Indiana State University (Terre Haute, IN) in 1969; and her bachelor's degree in health, physical education, recreation, secondary education from Hanover College (Hanover, IN) in 1968.

The assistant dean in the WIU-QC College of Education and Human Services is an administrative position with responsibilities for leading and coordinating WIU-QC COEHS programs including: serving as an administrative officer for the College as assigned by the dean; engaging in recruitment and retention activities; leading articulation and collaboration efforts (in consultation with COEHS academic chairs/directors and the COEHS dean, with other higher educational institutions); coordinating course scheduling and facility usage with COEHS chairs/directors and appropriate WIU-QC campus administrators; writing and/or compiling required College and University reports; serving as a liaison between COEHS chairs/directors and WIU-QC student services; serving as the COEHS administrative officer in the absence of the dean and associate/assistant deans; and performing other duties as assigned by the dean.
