On February 7, 2025, the third WIU Roundtable of the year, took place in the Lamoine Room of the Union. The first topic was the teacher shortage and methods being used at the state and local levels to address the needs of school districts. John Meixner, ROE 26 Regional Superintendent of Schools presented with Tom Withee on the recent survey taken by the Illinois Association of Regional School Superintendents and Goshen Consulting showing the teacher shortfall.
The second presentation showed State Efforts to Address the Teacher Shortage. Dr. Jim LaPrad provided information on the WIU Programs that are successfully providing solutions for area schools. Katie Jennings of ROE 33 provided information on programing that the ROE 33 uses to help schools grow their own teachers. John Glasgow of the WIU Seymour Center talked about the role of the Center in developing teachers for schools within the twenty-two-county area served by WIU.
The third presentation focused on International Efforts to solve the teacher shortage. Those presenting were: Any Jordan of Donovan CUSD #3, Bob Gound of Bushnell Prairie City CUSD #170 and Dr. Mark Twomey of Macomb School District #185. All three districts have hired teachers from outside of the United States. Each superintendent discussed the process that they used and the challenges that they faced, as well as the successes that resulted.
The final presentation focused on Artificial Intelligence in Pre-K-12 Education. Various topics within the scope of Artificial Intelligence were presented by Lisa Schwartz of the Illinois Technology Center and Dr. Rashmi Sharma of Western Illinois University.
The fourth WIU Roundtable of the year will take place on April 4, 2025. This will be the legal conference featuring school attorneys from across the State of Illinois. The invitations will go out shortly.

Today, as successful professionals, you carry the legacy of WIU’s commitment to excellence into the world, and now, more than ever, your involvement can help shape the future of the University.
One of the most impactful ways you can continue to support WIU and give back to the next generation is by connecting with current students. One of the most effective ways to do this is through participation in WIU’s Career and Internship Fairs. These events provide students with direct access to potential employers, guidance on career paths, and networking opportunities that can be life-changing.
Even if your company or organization currently lacks a formal internship program, don’t let that hold you back. WIU is committed to helping you develop and implement one, ensuring both your organization and our students benefit. Internships provide real-world experience for students while offering your company fresh perspectives and the chance to recruit top talent early on.
By participating in the Career and Internship Fairs, you not only contribute to the success of students but also enhance the reputation and growth of your organization. It’s a mutually beneficial partnership that strengthens the WIU community and builds lasting connections for the future.
