MACOMB, IL -- Since May 2010, faculty and staff members at Western Illinois University have helped contribute close to $1,600 to Macomb-based Samaritan Well – all by just taking a walk. From 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, WIU employees will, once again, take to the Hanson Field track and walk for a good cause via another Western Walks-a-Thon.

Sponsored by the Employee Wellness committee at Western and Hy-Vee in Macomb, the Fall 2011 Western Walks-a-Thon will include healthy snacks (provided by Hy-Vee); prizes (awarded every hour); and is open free to all WIU faculty and staff members.

"For our Sept. 20 Western Walks-a-Thon, we are again collecting donations for Samaritan Well, an agency that provides services for men, women and children who are homeless and in need of shelter," Judy Yeast, chair of Employee Wellness and associate director of Campus Recreation, explained. "In the three Western Walks-a-Thon events we've held since May 2010, we've collected $1,560.76 to donate to Samaritan Well. It's a great way for WIU's employees to demonstrate one of our University's core values, social responsibility."

Yeast added the goal of this Western Walks-a-Thon event is to have one team member walk every hour. WIU faculty and staff members can download the registration form from the Western Well website at www.wiu.edu/vpas/wellness/westernwalks.php or pick up the form at the human resources office (Sherman Hall 105) or at the Campus Recreation office (in the Donald S. Spencer Student Recreation Center). Registration is due by 4:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16 and completed forms can be delivered to either human resources or the Campus Recreation office in the Spencer Student Recreation Center.

Western Walks-a-Thon Fall 2011 will be held on the Hanson Field track; if it rains, it will be held inside on the track in the Spencer Student Recreation Center.
