IIRA Sustainability Brownbaggers Fall 2011 Schedule

MACOMB, IL - - The Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs (IIRA) at Western Illinois University will once again sponsor a series of Sustainability Brownbaggers lunch-time conversation events. The one-hour presentations, held over the lunch hour from 12:30–1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, are described as "conversations for the natural and social sciences, business and the arts and humanities."

The Sustainability Brownbaggers events will be held in WIU's Leslie F. Malpass Library, third floor. Individuals are welcome to bring their lunches to each event. Upcoming presentations include:

Tuesday, Sept. 20: "Is Global Warming Underway?"
Presented by: Thomas H. Alton, associate professor, WIU biological sciences

Tuesday, Sept. 27: "Climate Change: Cause, Effects and Solutions"
Presented by: Jongnam Choi, professor, WIU geography

Tuesday, Oct. 4: "Urban Infrastructure and the Environment: Keeping the Environment Safe While Maintaining the Modern Lifestyle"
Presented by: Rizwan Hamid, president, Aqualyze, Inc. (www.aqualyzeinc.com)

Tuesday, Oct. 11: "Sustainable Energy Education"
Presented by: Jolene Willis, program assistant, Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs Wind Energy Program; and Michelle Aurand, WIU interdisciplinary studies

Tuesday, Oct. 18: "Climate Change: Opportunities for Mitigation and Adaptation in the U.S. Midwest"
Presented by: Joel Gruver, assistant professor, WIU School of Agriculture

Tuesday, Oct. 25: "Voices from the Past: Warnings About Climate Ignored"
Presented by: Timothy Collins, assistant director, Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs

Tuesday, Nov. 1: "WIU Coneflower Project: Teaching Sustainability Across the Curriculum"
Presented by: Amy Patrick Mossman, associate professor, WIU English and journalism

The Sustainability Brownbaggers series is presented in cooperation with Western Illinois University Libraries, WIU Center for Innovation in Teaching and Research (CITR), WIU Centennial Honors College and WIU Employee Wellness.
