Contract Breakage Fee

If a student is enrolled in classes, has less than 60 credit hours, does not have an approved petition on file and cancels their current housing contract, they will be charged a contract breakage fee equal to a semester double room charge. (Actual rates will vary based on individual student's rate plan.)

If a student meets requirements to live off-campus, but has a current active contract for the academic year and does not have an approved petition for a waiver of the contract breakage before canceling the contract, they will be charged the contract breakage fee.

Fraternity/sorority releases, WESL students and students who leave or depart the University because of Academic Suspension or Academic Dismissal will not be assessed the contract breakage fee.

Students who do not live in the residence hall, but have not been officially released may be subject to a non-compliance charge.

New Transfer Students

The contract breakage fee will be waived for any cancellation for the spring semester for new transfer students with fall admittance that enter a contract for the fall and will reach 60 hours by the spring semester of that same academic year and has 4 semesters of full time post high school education prior to admittance to WIU.  A petition to be released from the housing contract and for the contract breakage fee to be waived must be filed before December 1 of the fall semester in order for this waiver of the contract breakage fee to be granted.

Note: The $50 housing application processing fee is non-refundable in any instance.
