Antivirus Software Options Available to Students for Personal Devices
It is important to have antivirus software to protect your computer and your files from hackers and viruses. Western Illinois University (WIU) does not provide this software.
The list below includes free options for your personally-owned devices. Please keep in mind that uTech does not officially support or recommend any specific brand, and there are many other choices available online. Use this list as a starting point for your own research.
Free Options for Windows
- Microsoft Windows Defender: Built into your Windows system
- Malwarebytes Free: Download Malwarebytes
- AVG AntiVirus Free: Download AVG
Free Options for Mac (OS X)
- Malwarebytes Free: Download Malwarebytes
- Sophos Home Free: Download Sophos
- Avira Free Security: Download Avira
Important Tips Before You Install
- Avoid Conflicts: Do not install two different antivirus programs at the same time. If your computer already has one, you should remove it before installing a new one. Having two programs running at once can cause your computer to crash or slow down.
- Existing Infections: If your computer is already infected with a virus, the new software might have trouble installing correctly.
- Personal Use Only: These programs are intended for use on your own laptop or desktop, not on university-owned equipment.
