Fall 2014 International Student Scholarships Awarded

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL — Several international students at Western Illinois University will receive scholarships for the Fall 2014 semester. According to Center of International Studies Assistant Director of Orientation and Student Activities Dana Vizdal, the student scholarships are awarded to currently enrolled students. The Fall 2014 scholarships and recipients are listed below.

WEOG (Western Europeans and Others Group) Award – $500 Each

  • Bharat Chandra Gullapelly (India), chemistry, graduate student
  • Xitong Chen (China), journalism, sophomore
  • Azat Jumayev (Turkmenistan), sociology, graduate student
  • Naresha Kore (India), chemistry, graduate student
  • Archana Pasupulety (India), chemistry, graduate student

Bessie Meyers Scholarship Fund – $350
Samantha Flores Guerrero (Mexico), music, sophomore

Dr. In-Kon Kim Scholarship – $900
Yunhee Kim (South Korea), piano, graduate student

Ruth Hughes WESL Scholarship – $700
Alessandra Faggionato (Italy), educational and interdisciplinary studies, graduate student

Francis and Peggy Davern International Scholarship – $125
Omotola Ashafa (Nigeria), health sciences, graduate student

Macomb Branch AAUW International Student Scholarship – $375
Elkamil Ibrahim Mohammed (Sudan), engineering technology, senior

Rodney and Bertha Fink International Scholarship – $1,000
Fidelia Awenegieme (Nigeria), computer science, graduate student

Vizdal also said new scholarships were established this semester, the Oluseye Kolawole Scholarship, which was created by a WIU alumnus to help students from Africa, specifically Nigeria, in need of financial support. The Eta Epsilon Chapter of Phi Beta Delta also created two new scholarships, one for international students and one for study abroad students. Fall 2014 recipients include:

Oluseye Kolawole – $500
Henry Chukwuva Onyia (Nigeria), health sciences, graduate student

Phi Beta Delta International Student Award – $500
Azat Jumayev (Turkmenistan), sociology, graduate student
